Regulation of UK Private Detectives For Private Detective Bradford in West Yorkshire

In 2013, the Home Secretary made an announcement of the Government’s target for the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to manage private inspection activities which include Private Detective Bradford in West Yorkshire. The Home Office, in December 2014 announced that the government would enforce the law requiring private investigation services to be licensed in the course of the upcoming Parliamentary session which was to open in May of 2015. However, the licensing of private examiners is yet to be executed.
The SIA and the Home Office continue to work together since the latter is responsible for regulating private investigations. Before the commencement date of regulation, the SIA will be in constant engagement with players in the security sector to be up to date on the “Get Licenced” criteria while continuing to widely share more details in the proposed private investigation regulations. Immediately the SIA arrives at a conclusion with the Home Office about possible timings, this would be revealed too.

Who will need a licence? (

Private Detective Bradford ( ask where to get a private investigator license? The licensable activities of private investigations are defined in the Private Security Industry Act 2001 and a license can be obtained through a reputable training institution. For the list to remain updated, the Home Office will review the description as laid out in the act. That means that any questions about the particularities of the activities that will be licensable in the coming times should be addressed to the Home Office.
The act states that any private investigator or private detective will require a licence from the SIA if they are to engage in inquiries, surveillance or investigations that are conducted with the intention of.

  • gaining information about a specific person or about that specific person’s location or activities
  • gaining information about the background, or means in which and by which property has been harmed or lost. A certification will be obligatory for anyone that is offering contracted private investigation services
  • Staff, employees, directors, managers, inspectors, or partners of private investigation firms all fall under this rule

The Home Office has not made it clear whether ‘in-house’ private investigations should also be licensed.
Director, for the purposes of the Private Security Industry Act 2001, means executive and non-executive directors, parent firm directors and business institutions that have directorship.
The following acts, as stated in the Act, will not be needing a license.

  • activities particularly for the purposes of market research
  • activities conducted entirely for the purposes of a credit check
  • expert activities of working solicitors and Barristers
  • practicing accountants’ professional activities
  • professional activities of reporters and broadcasters, and activities that have a sole intention to provide information to broadcasters and reporters
  • activities with direct link to reference to registers accessible to the public, published works, and records and registers which a person is authorised to access
  • activities in which the person that is investigated has given permission or has the knowledge about it


The sanction for working as an unregistered private examiner will be.

  • A fine of £5,000 or a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment is given when the person is convicted by a Sheriff Court, District Court or a Magistrates Court

Sanctions for providing for unlicensed personnel will be.

  • having been convicted at a District Court, Sherriff’s Court or a Magistrate’s Court, the maximum penalty will be imprisonment for 6 months and / or fine not exceeding 5000 pounds.
  • having been convicted after prosecution at a Higher Court, Crown Court, Sheriff or a Justiciary and any trial involving a jury, the maximum penalty will be imprisonment for 5 months and / or fine that is unlimited ( at the discretion of the court)
